IH44

 


The template for the IH44 system is any quadrilateral with two adjacent sides equal to one another and with the other two adjacent sides also equal, thus forming a kite or arrowhead shaped figure. An example of each is shown   below. All sides of the quadrilateral can be shaped as indicated by the half-arrows. The template and any tile shape formed from it have no internal  symmetry as indicated by the dog pattern. An example of a template is

A section of the tiling formed by this same template is shown below, with a translation cluster outlined.  The two basic translations are indicated by the the vectors drawn from the highlighted cluster. The tiling no centres of rotational symmetry, but has two different types of axes of glide reflection symmetry. An example of each of is indicated. The tiling symmetry group is pg.

As an example, a tile in the shape of a bird, based on a design by Escher, can be formed as shown

    

The associated tiling requires tiles of two  different colours to avoid adjacent tiles having the same colour.
