IH20

The template for the IH20 system is a regular hexagon as shown below. None of six sides can be shaped as indicated by the arrowheads. The template and its associated tile have  a centre of six-fold rotation  symmetry and six axes of reflection symmetry as indicated by the dog pattern.

A single tile forms the translation cluster.

A section of the tiling formed by the template is also shown below, with a single-tile translation cluster outlined.  The two basic translations are indicated by  the vectors drawn from the highlighted cluster. The tiling has three different centres of rotation symmetry, one two-fold, one three-fold and one four-fold, as well as two axes of mirror and two axes of glide reflection symmetry. An example of each  is indicated. The tiling symmetry group is p6m.

No shaping of the template sides dictates that the only tile is a regular hexagon. Also the template has the full symmetry of a regular hexagon so that no internal decoration of the tile is required to lower its symmetry. Four different colours are required to avoid adjacent tiles in the tiling having the same colour.
